The ever improving Dream battled the Liberty on Sunday July 28, 2008. The final score of 86 to 76, Liberty, undermined the Dream’s strong performance. Three of the Dream players, Iziane Castro Marques, Ivory Latta, and Betty Lennox scored in double digits. Usually Atlanta gets off to a slow start but this game, Latta lit the torch of intensity immediately. Just about halfway through the first quarter, following two beautiful plays getting the ball to Castro and Kasha Terry for solid jump shots, Latta turns around and hits three 3-pt shots within a minute and a half. The excitement did not stop there. Lennox was awaken from her “score-less” coma and landed two smooth jump shots within the last minutes of the 1st quarter. Another exceptional performer Erika DeSouza showed that she is a force to be reckoned with. Her second game back after she injured her lower leg in May, DeSouza reminded Atlanta spectators that she reigned supreme in rebounds. Her athleticism prevailed as she went strong in the paint and landed nine points along with 11 rebounds. DeSouza is definitely one of the top warriors in the WNBA. In many occasions she was double teamed and fought through to get a pass or shot off. Although the Dream played well and came together as one physically powerful unit, their efforts were negated by the Liberty’s ability to get out of the constant lead changes to gain a six point advantage with 2:35 remaining on the clock that the Dream could not recover from. It seems as if Coach Meadors’ decision not to start Betty for the 1st time gave Lennox the fire she needs to get the Dream off to a great start. As MVP of the game, she believes that after the break the August 29th is going to show onlookers a new Dream. Coach Meadors is going to take the time to work with each player individually and regroup on August 11th for team practices. With this set plan, everyone is awaiting a new and improved team. Due to their constant traveling time has not been on their side. This break for the Olympics is believed to give the team the advantage they need. Besides, with a record of 3 – 24, only the best is to be expected. There’s only one way to go for these girls and that direction is up. |
