Volunteers in Atlanta’s Fulton County raised a total of $948,516 after working a total of 54,000 service hours in the Atlanta Fulton Public Library. This composed of the work of 1,800 employees.

Ninety volunteers donated over 100 hours each, and 26 donated over 200 hours each. Volunteers serve a variety of roles, such as literacy tour guides, English-as-a-Second-Language and math tutors, computer and clerical assistants, job search coaches and special event hosts.
Many organizations are taking advantage of volunteer work, from local governments to national corporations. The key challenge is getting good volunteers in the midst of a potential economic recession. The United States can always count on interns as these young minds will focus on the opportunity to learn or even win a permanent position with the company they intern for, but the pure volunteer could become a rare item.
Volunteer opportunities still exist, however, but the general question is, “How Long?”
Some Potential Volunteer Opportunities:

- Hospitals, Clubs, Peace Corps, Local National Guard (Called State Defense Forces), Libraries, and The United Nations.

There is also a new trend known as virtual volunteering. Wikipedia defines virtual volunteering as a volunteer who completes tasks, in whole or in part, offsite from the organization being assisted, using the Internet and a home, school, or work computer. Virtual volunteering is also known as online volunteering, cyber service, and tutoring, and various other names. Virtual volunteering is similar to telecommuting, except that, instead of online employees who are paid, these are online volunteers who are not paid.

With this in mind, it is quite an accomplishment for the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library.
