Rosenstein will consult with President Donald Trump on Thursday in the middle of concerns about his fate in the administration after The New York Times reported he privately recommended taping the President and weighed forcibly eliminating him from office. If he leaves the Justice Department, somebody else will presume the duties of supervising Robert Mueller and his sweeping examination into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.
Trump has reportedly considered firing Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who currently oversees Mueller’s probe, or firing Mueller. On Tuesday at the White House, when asked if he has confidence in Rosenstein, Trump demurred, responding, “Next question, please.” And last month, the president tweeted about “the Fake & Corrupt Russia Investigation,” writing, “Mueller is most conflicted of all (except Rosenstein).”[1]
