A roadway collapsed in Mississippi on Monday night, killing two people and injuring at least ten others.

Mississippi Highway Patrol officers confirmed the lanes of Highway 26 in George County had collapsed. Emergency personnel and rescue crews were called to the scene.

Mississippi Highway Patrol Corporal Cal Robertson said the collapse is around 50 to 60 feet long and 20 to 30 feet deep.

Robertson said seven vehicles were involved in the incident and, “some of these cars are stacked on top of each other.” Cranes will be needed to get the cars out of the hole, he said.

In Robertson’s opinion, torrential rain may have caused the roadway to collapse, adding that drivers may not have seen the road in front of them as impassable.
