Nikol Davis, founder of NIKOL Talent Group, where she collectively draws on her runway experience and creativity to coach aspiring models and develop catwalk choreography wrote a compelling piece on her professional blog that has caught the eyes of many. Nikol expertly communicates what many in the Modeling Industry seldom seem to totally understand; “How to Determine Your Model rate”.
Many in the industry are modeling either for free, or at rates far below their worth, while some overcharge. The industry trend since 2016 of modeling for free especially among new models poses a threat, insofar as livelihood of models is concerned.
Nikol’s blog, “Rinikulousness”, catered for professionals, but clearly comprehensible by those new in the industry points out key factors to consider when determining the best rate to consider for clients.
Here is an excerpt:
“I’m asked all the time by freelance models how to determine your model rate
It’s tough to lock down a solid answer for this question because there are a lot of variable to consider:
- How long have you been modeling?
- What is your strength?
- What type of gig is it, and what will you be doing?
- Who is it for?
- How many hours are required?
- How far do you have to travel?
- What benefits do you bring?
I believe freelance models should have a runway rate and a print/other rate. Based on your strengths, you can charge more for one rate over another. Also, determine how you will establish your rate (and this should be per gig) – hourly (if hourly have a minimum number of hours, i.e. 2 or 3-hour minimum), day rate (have a max number of hours for day rate, no less than 8 hours), half day rate (half day is generally 4-5 hours worth of work).”
