Researchers call the candidate 2017 OF201, following the Minor Planet Center’s standard provisional naming system. It travels far beyond Pluto on one of the widest known orbits around the Sun. Its discovery expands the known population inhabiting the solar system’s poorly explored outer frontier.

A team led by Sihao Cheng reported the object publicly in May 2025. Jiaxuan Li and David Spergel also contributed to the discovery and orbital analysis. The International Astronomical Union’s Minor Planet Center then published the object’s observations and designation. However, astronomers have not formally classified 2017 OF201 as a dwarf planet. That distinction remains central to every discussion of the finding.

A discovery hidden in archival images

The team found 2017 OF201 by searching archival telescope images rather than conducting a dedicated survey. Those images came from facilities in Chile and Hawaii, including observations made with powerful wide-field cameras. The researchers used computational tools to connect faint points appearing at different positions on different nights. They eventually linked 19 detections spanning about seven years. That long observational arc allowed a much stronger orbital calculation than a single season could provide.

Distant objects move slowly against background stars, making their trails difficult to recognize. Weather, image quality, crowded fields, and irregular observing schedules add further complications. Software can test whether separated detections match a physically plausible path around the Sun. Researchers must then inspect promising links and reject image defects or unrelated sources. This combined approach turned overlooked data into evidence for a remarkable world.

Why several years of data mattered

Astronomers first measure positions and brightness, not size, shape, or composition. They fit an orbit by comparing the observed motion with gravitational models. More observations reduce uncertainty because a tiny orbital segment can support several possible trajectories. Archival records therefore provide valuable leverage for objects moving across the sky at a glacial pace. The Minor Planet Center preserves these measurements and coordinates reports from observers worldwide.

An immense and highly elongated orbit

Current calculations give 2017 OF201 a highly elongated, or eccentric, orbit. It approaches within roughly 45 astronomical units of the Sun at perihelion. One astronomical unit equals the average distance between Earth and the Sun. Neptune orbits near 30 astronomical units, while Pluto averages about 39.5 units. The candidate therefore remains beyond Neptune even during its closest solar passage.

At aphelion, the object may travel more than 1,600 astronomical units from the Sun. Its estimated semimajor axis, which describes the orbit’s overall scale, reaches roughly 840 astronomical units. One revolution could take about 24,000 years, although revised measurements may adjust that estimate. The orbit also tilts relative to the main planetary plane. These properties place 2017 OF201 among the extreme trans-Neptunian objects.

A world near the detection limit

The candidate currently lies around 90 astronomical units away, based on reported orbital solutions. At that distance, sunlight has roughly one eight-thousandth of its intensity near Earth. The object consequently appears as an exceptionally faint point in large telescopes. Astronomers cannot resolve its surface directly with ordinary imaging. They infer many physical properties from brightness and assumptions instead.

Its immense orbit also creates a severe selection effect. The body spends only a small fraction of each revolution near enough for present surveys to detect. For most of its journey, distance would make it vastly fainter. The discovery team estimated that comparable objects could remain numerous and unseen. Its single detection may therefore represent a much larger hidden population.

Why it may qualify as a dwarf planet

Brightness-based estimates suggest a diameter near 700 kilometers, or about 435 miles. That figure depends heavily on albedo, which measures how efficiently a surface reflects sunlight. A bright, icy surface would require a smaller diameter to produce the observed light. A darker surface would require a larger body. No direct size measurement currently resolves that uncertainty.

A 700-kilometer diameter would make 2017 OF201 much smaller than Pluto. Pluto spans about 2,377 kilometers, while the candidate would approach one-third of that width. Even so, the object could possess enough gravity to pull itself into a rounded shape. Internal composition, temperature, and material strength determine when that process occurs. Those unknowns prevent a confident physical classification.

The official classification requirements

The International Astronomical Union defines a dwarf planet through several criteria. It must orbit the Sun and cannot be another object’s satellite. Its gravity must produce a nearly round shape. It also must not have cleared other bodies from its orbital neighborhood. 2017 OF201 clearly follows a solar orbit, but researchers lack evidence about its shape.

The union currently recognizes five dwarf planets: Ceres, Pluto, Eris, Haumea, and Makemake. Astronomers often discuss several other large trans-Neptunian bodies as likely dwarf planets. However, size estimates alone do not settle the hydrostatic-equilibrium requirement. For now, “possible dwarf planet” accurately communicates both the evidence and uncertainty.

Why the unusual orbit matters

The orbit preserves clues about gravitational events during the solar system’s history. Neptune may scatter objects outward when repeated encounters exchange energy and angular momentum. Passing stars and the Milky Way’s tidal field can influence bodies at enormous distances. Interactions among these forces may create pathways resembling the candidate’s extreme trajectory. Researchers can test those pathways through long numerical simulations.

The continuing Planet Nine question

Extreme trans-Neptunian objects often enter debates about the proposed Planet Nine. That hypothetical planet could shape distant orbits through its gravity. Some researchers cite apparent clustering among certain orbital orientations as indirect evidence. Others argue that limited sky coverage and discovery biases can mimic clustering. 2017 OF201 adds an important data point, but it neither confirms nor disproves the planet.

Its orbital orientation does not simply reinforce every previously reported clustering pattern. That difference may help researchers evaluate whether selection effects dominate the available sample. Future dynamical studies can test the candidate under models with and without another massive planet. The resulting comparisons should narrow possibilities without turning one discovery into decisive proof.

How astronomers can confirm its nature

Researchers need additional astrometry to refine the orbit and predict future positions accurately. Measurements at different points along its path will reduce remaining uncertainties. Thermal infrared observations could constrain diameter by measuring emitted heat rather than reflected light. Color measurements or spectroscopy might reveal surface ices, although faintness makes such work difficult. A stellar occultation could provide a direct size estimate if the object crosses a distant star.

The Vera C. Rubin Observatory can greatly expand searches for slow, faint solar system objects. Its repeated wide-field images will help expose candidates and recover known bodies. Other observatories can then perform targeted follow-up observations. Together, those measurements may show whether 2017 OF201 is round and truly qualifies as a dwarf planet. Whatever its final classification, the candidate already reveals how much of the outer solar system remains uncharted.

Astronomers have identified a remote solar system body that could qualify as a previously unknown dwarf planet.
