Clearly, sleep\ndeprivation is wide-spread and a risk factor for overall well-being.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With chronic sleep deprivation, the brain\u2019s\nability to maintain attention and focus continues to decline over time.&nbsp;In\naddition to impairing mental function, lack of sleep has been associated with a\nhost of&nbsp;risks to overall health.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prevent sleep deprivation and take charge of your mental and physical health with these tips from Kansagra:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nap\nresponsibly.<\/strong>\nWhen you\u2019re feeling tired, it\u2019s no surprise the best solution may be sleep. Some\nresearch suggests a quick power nap can actually give you a stronger boost than\ncaffeine. However, too much rest during the day can throw off your nighttime\nsleep pattern. Aim for no more than 20 minutes so you don\u2019t wake up groggy, and\ntime your nap for the mid-point of your wake cycle (halfway between when you\nwake up and go to sleep).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Limit screen time.<\/strong> If you turn to your phone to help wind down while you\u2019re in\nbed, you\u2019re not alone, but you may be doing more harm than good. According to a\nsurvey conducted by Mattress Firm on sleep habits, the average person scrolls on his or her phone while lying in bed for more\nthan 12 minutes before shutting down for the night. What\u2019s more, the light from\nthe screen serves as a stimulant, as does the digital content you\u2019re viewing.\nThat means you\u2019re making it physically harder to fall asleep than if you put\ndown your devices at least 30 minutes before bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stick to a sleep schedule.<\/strong> The average person gets less than six hours of\nsleep per night, according to the survey \u2013 a far cry from the eight hours most\nexperts recommend. One way to buck this trend is to make it a point to turn in\nand wake up at the same time every day so you synchronize your sleep time with\nyour internal clock.
