Arrival at the Capitol for Lying-in-State Ceremony

The nation united today to honor former President Jimmy Carter, who died on December 29, 2024, at 100. His body arrived at the U.S. Capitol for a lying-in-state ceremony, offering a poignant moment to reflect on his remarkable life and his status as the longest-living president in U.S. history.

The day began in Atlanta, where Carter’s casket departed from the Carter Presidential Center. Upon arriving at Joint Base Andrews in Washington, D.C., a motorcade escorted the casket to the U.S. Navy Memorial. In recognition of Carter’s naval service, a horse-drawn caisson carried his casket along Pennsylvania Avenue, evoking memories of his 1977 inaugural parade.

Ceremony at the Capitol Rotunda

Later in the day, a private ceremony unfolded at the Capitol Rotunda. Members of Congress, Supreme Court justices, and other dignitaries gathered to pay tribute. Vice President Kamala Harris praised Carter’s “unwavering commitment to peace and justice,” while Senate Majority Leader John Thune commended his bipartisan efforts to modernize government and advance human rights. House Speaker Mike Johnson also delivered a heartfelt eulogy, emphasizing Carter’s enduring dedication to public service.

After the private ceremony, the Capitol opened its doors to the public. From 7 p.m. until Thursday morning, citizens from across the country will have the opportunity to honor the former president as part of six days of memorial observances.

Carter’s Legacy: A Life of Service

Jimmy Carter’s presidency from 1977 to 1981 left a lasting impact through achievements such as the Camp David Accords and significant civil service and energy reforms. However, his influence grew even stronger after his time in office. Through the Carter Center, he became a global advocate for democracy, conflict resolution, and disease eradication. His efforts to eliminate Guinea worm disease and mediate international disputes earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

Upcoming State Funeral and Burial Plans

President Joe Biden will deliver a eulogy during a state funeral at Washington National Cathedral on Thursday. The day has been designated a National Day of Mourning, with federal offices closing as a mark of respect. After the service, Carter’s body will be transported to Plains, Georgia, where he will be laid to rest beside his wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter, who passed away in November 2023.

Bipartisan Tributes

Carter’s passing has prompted bipartisan recognition of his contributions. Even President-elect Donald Trump, a frequent critic during political campaigns, described him as “a good man” who “worked hard to make America a better place.” On Thursday, Trump will join past presidents and world leaders in attending Carter’s funeral, underscoring the widespread admiration for his life’s work.

A Nation Reflects

This week, Americans have lined Pennsylvania Avenue and other landmarks to honor the legacy of Jimmy Carter. As the nation mourns, it celebrates a man who tirelessly dedicated his life to public service and humanitarian efforts. From his presidency to his post-presidential work, Carter leaves an enduring example of leadership, compassion, and commitment to improving the world.
